Paso Robles, California is one of the fast-growing towns in the county with a 31% increase in dwelling units since 1990. In 1993 it overtook Atascadero to become the second-largest community in the county after San Luis Obispo.
The Spanish name for this town, El Paso de Robles (the Pass of the Oaks), tells you a lot. The hills around Paso Robles, California are covered with oak groves. That is, they are wherever they haven't been planted as vineyards or walnut groves. The Spanish heritage is pervasive and a great influence on the present, including those wines made a long time ago by the clergy in the missions.
Paso, as the locals call it, is in the third largest California wine country region that is on the front pages more and more often for the quality of its wines. Rhone varietals are grown region wide, producing big, fruit-forward wines that can compete with wines made anywhere. Wine tastings are available on a daily basis at most Paso Robles wineries in the region, and you will rejoice in the quality you find. For more detail on this special part of California wine country, look at the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (formerly known as the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers Association).
Make your plans now. This country is going to be the next place to be. It is reminiscent of
Tuscany, with its rolling hills, olive groves, and Mediterranean sunshine. The countryside
is incredibly beautiful; the wines are equally good.
What's great about it is that you don't have to go to Tuscany for it. The hospitality and quality are here in America, and they are accessible to everyone who cares about fine wines and California wine country. Downtown Paso Robles also has the distinction of having won twice (!) the National Main Street Award as one of the best downtowns in the USA. Downtown Paso Robles is a vibrant mix of boutiques, wine tasting rooms, restaurants and other businesses that appeal to locals and visitors alike.
